Woman and childFree NHS Health Check for 40 – 74 year olds

Over 20,000 Oxfordshire residents had their free NHS Health Check last year.

The 20 minute check focuses on preventing the causes of illnesses, such as

  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • diabetes
  • kidney disease
  • dementia

and provides you with your own personalised cardiovascular risk score.

If you are aged between 40 – 74 please visit the NHS Health Check website or contact your GP practice to see if you’re eligible and make an appointment. For more information on health in Oxfordshire visit our Public Health website.

70% of smokers would like to stop

Smoking is the single greatest cause of preventable illness and premature death in the UK.

Research shows that 70% of smokers would like to stop, and their chances of quitting are four times better with support from a trained stop smoking adviser. The Smoking Advice Service can provide this and help you come up with a plan to achieve your goal of quitting, or cutting down.

Find an adviser near you or telephone Oxfordshire Smoking Advice Service Helpline on 01865 787165. The line is staffed Monday – Friday during office hours.

150 minutes

That’s how long adults should aim to be physically active a week. For children it’s at least 60 minutes a day. This activity needs to raise your heart rate and be sustained for at least ten minutes.

This regular exercise helps

  • maintain and lose weight
  • improve co-ordination, flexibility and muscle strength (which can help to reduce the risk of falls for older people)
  • ease depression and anxiety
  • improve sleep patterns
  • and reduce high blood pressure.

Also, if you are active it's more likely your children will be too.
